We all talk about it every day, we all at one point or the other wished we had more of self-control. But what is self-control? I am sure a lot of people define it as just control over self; well this piece will be telling you more than just that.
Self-control is an individual’s ability to have control, influence and authority over his own behavior. Also it is an ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behavior in the face of temptations and impulses.
Self-control is also a sign of inner strength and control over yourself, your actions, and your reactions. According to Joseph B. Wirthlin “Self-control is one mark of a matured person; it applies to control of language, physical treatment of others, and the appetites of the body”. We all at certain points in our lives love to be in control of situations like: controlling our younger ones, controlling our peers, controlling activities and also being in charge of decision making in relation to our lives.
Basically once self-control is mentioned a lot of people tend to associate it with control over anger and temper issues, but that’s not all. It has to do with every single thing about an individual, ie your decisions on what you eat, when you sleep, how you react to emotions and also how to treat people at different occasions.
I’m sure you are beginning to wonder why you need self-control
Self-control helps us to keep our emotions under control at all times, meaning no rush and rash decisions especially in difficult situations. Lack of self-control will compromise our judgment, common sense and confidence. Also once emotion takes over, reason usually flies out the window and the actions taken are most of the time not as productive as they should be. That is why Self-control, regardless of what we are doing, be It a physical act or a mental decision, must be maintained to produce desirable results.
Lastly self-control at all times gives you the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through, without changing your mind, and is therefore, one of the important requirements for achieving goals.
What are you waiting for?
It’s high time we all have control not just on other people around us but on ourselves. Remember, even a little self-control can save you a lot of time, energy and errors.
I’m sure we all need stuffs that help us save time and of course energy with less errors involved. As Dr. Bob Chope once said “You can’t always control the wind, but you can control your sails”. Meaning you can’t control everything around you but you can control how you react to it and that’s self-control!
You are eager to know more about self-control, right? I assure you there will be sequences to this….
